Welcome to the Electronic Literature Foundation's presentation of Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus.

The author, Mary Shelley, was born on August 30, 1797 and wrote Frankenstein when she was 18. Shelley was the only child of Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin, and she married poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Her novel has been classified as Gothic Romance, Horror, Science Fiction, and even as a feminist critique. Major influences for this work include Metamorphoses and Paradise Lost.
