![]() Welcome to the Electronic Literature Foundation's presentation of Dracula. Bram Stoker published this novel in 1897. The title character is based on the historical figure Vlad Tepes, or Vlad the Impaler, a 15th century Wallachian ruler who enjoyed torturing people. Vlad was nicknamed Dracula (son of the dragon, or "dracul") because his father had been a member of the Order of the Dragon. "Dracul", however, can also mean devil, and in his later years, the name Dracula was interpreted to mean "son of the devil." According to legend, Vlad would set up banquet tables so he could dine while watching his victims slowly die. We hope you enjoy this presentation! | |
